The Leitrim Design House is dedicated to supporting the creative industries in County Leitrim. As part of our 2009 Business Development Training Leitrim Design House will run a “New Product Development Programme”. The programme begins on April 15th at the Dock in Carrick-on-Shannon.
A member-based business development and marketing organisation the Leitrim Design House is dedicated to promoting excellence and economic development in the field of contemporary art, craft and design. The Leitrim Design House provides a strong support system for artists, designers and craft workers based in Leitrim and is a very clear example of how the talents of local people can be turned into a viable enterprise.
The “New Product Development Programme” will enable designers and makers to develop new suites of products or additions to existing ranges. It will help those working in creative business to determine what it is they really want to achieve from their own business. In these challenging economic times all businesses are looking at creative ways to develop and grow.
The programme is suitable for people from a wide range of disciplines including fashion, art, home wares, traditional and contemporary craft, photography, print & publishing and any organisation or individual wishing to develop, brand and promote a product or service.
Led by Eddie Shanahan this practical programme will address key issues from market research and consumer trends, sources of inspiration and competitor analysis. From research through to development it will cover crucial topics such as introduction to marketplace and promotion, market structure and strategy.
All aspects of developing your “own” creative business will be dealt with from marketing and design to range development, protecting intellectual property, brand development and presentation to market.
Eddie Shanahan works with a host of leading Irish and international companies and individuals and is one of Ireland’s leading experts on fashion, lifestyle and retail. He is a business consultant to several leading Irish design companies including Louise Kennedy, The Kilkenny group, Enterprise Ireland and Dunne’s stores.
His practical advise and guidance means this programme will be very hands on – working with real product created by individual designers .Participants will be supported and encouraged through a group dynamic and they will have the opportunity to learn from the experience of others as the programme progresses.
Delving into influences on contemporary lifestyle and how it assesses design, value and service participants will explore the emotional / rational dichotomy of selling.
The programme will define the characteristics of strong brands and assist participants in leveraging the power of their brands as a launch pad for new products.
The programme starts on the 15th of April and will run one day per month from 10.30 to 4pm on May 13th, June 10th and July 15th. The programme fee is €200.00 per person. A collaborative exhibitionbetween two of Leitrim’s most outstanding wood turners Niall Millar and Roy Humphreys.
Both makers are working in wood but with differing designs and products. Both highlight the beauty and diverse uses of wood, bringing age-old crafts into the twenty-first century.
Their brand new collection of hand-crafted garden and household produce come from the forests of County Leitrim. “In the Garden” features a range of items for the home and garden, some traditional, some modern, from potato mashers, honey spoons, and coffee scoops to hay rakes and shoe scrapers.

Showing the use of a pole-lathe, shaving horse and other hand tools. The pole-lathe is an apparatus for turning freshly-cut (green) wood into useful items with a chisel and a foot. The shaving horse is used to hold wood to be shaped with a draw-knife.
Admission is free.

Saturday 17th May—11am—4pm
Come along to learn in a fun way about different types of local wood and their uses. Play with wooden toys, try your hand and leg at the pole-lathe (9-99yrs), make a wooden toy like cars, figures (dog, cat), planes, all done with the use of your imagination and not one drop of electricity!
Admission is free.

The course will be run twice on the following dates:

Herb Day with Judith Hoad – at The Organic Centre,

The term "Herb" covers many different plants from several botanical families.
Herbs relate to health, their aroma delights the senses, they are rich in vitamins, minerals and natural antibiotics, they aid digestion, strengthen the immune system and support the innate healing process. Staff, students and lecturers of the centre will present talks, walks and demonstrations and explore the health benefits of herbs. We will officially open our new mint spiral and open air tea-bar with a selection of more than 20 mints.
Our guest speaker this year is Judith Hoad, honorary member of the Irish Association of Medical Herbalists, who has widely written on herbs and herbal remedies. She will talk about ‘Eating your way around the weed patch’.
Naturopath and Herbalist Gaby Wieland will demonstrate how to make tinctures and infused oils. The Grass Roof Café will be open with herbal dishes and entrance fee is €5.

What: A guided peatland walk, hosted by Clare Somerville
Where: European Geopark at the Cuilcagh Mountain Park and Marble Arch Caves, Florence Court, Co Fermanagh. A bus will run from the Organic Centre.
When: Bus leaves the Organic Centre at 3 and arrives in the Geopark at 3.45 Bus leaves Geopark at 5.00. The bus will drop people off in the Organic Centre and also in Manorhamilton
How much: Free to Greenbox network members, EUR8 for all others. (prebooking for bus and tour highly recommended – book through greenbox office 071 9856898 or email info@greenbox.ie).
Extra: Why peatland? Because bogs are both a carbon sink and a source of biodiversity.
