About the Award
Government websites that engage locals and visitors about ecotourism and responsible travel are eligible to win Planeta.com's annual Ecotourism Spotlight Award.

"Locals and visitors are seeking ecotourism experiences," said Planeta.com founder Ron Mader. "The Ecotourism Spotlight Award encourages government leaders to move forward as we give credit to those leading the pack."

Nominees for the 2009 award include Quito Visitors' Bureau, Responsible Tourism Guide to the Mekong , Ecotourism Laos, Failte Ireland and Mexico's National Commission of Natural Protected Areas.

"These nominees have utilized the Web in highly creative and innovative ways that engage locals and visitors and inspire us all," Mader said.

Examples of best practices include Failte Ireland's ecotourism handbook for all 16,000 Irish tourism businesses and Quito's documentation of eco activities including weekend bike rides. Web 2.0 tools are showcased on the Mekong site and multi-lingual information is showcased on the Mexico parks website. Two-time Ecotourism Spotlight Award winner Ecotourism Laos has been revising its site and shows how any good website is regularly updated to maintain its effectiveness.

The Ecotourism Spotlight Award was developed to create incentives for communication, opportunities for conversation and a reward for participation among government leaders working toward ecotourism and responsible travel. Municipal, regional, national and international government websites are eligible.

The winner is announced in celebration of World Tourism Day (September 27) to spotlight best practices from government institutions. Winners receive international exposure and bragging rights.

The Launch of Donegal Walking Week

Donegal Walking Week 2009, launched today by Donegal Sports Partnership, is hoping to encourage as many individuals, families, schools and workplaces as possible to get active and get walking. The event is primarily taking place from the 24th until 30th May with a focus on community led family fun walking programme all across County Donegal. The week will also include workshops and presentations on walking fitness, the environment and heritage.

The week long event will kick off with a family walk at the Bluestack Centre outside Donegal Town on the 24th May. This walk will include information sessions and practical demonstrations on outdoor activities such as tent pitching, outdoor footwear and clothing and personal safety.

Donegal Walking Week provides a great opportunity for both the local community and visitors to get out and sample the many walking opportunities Donegal has on offer. All abilities are catered for and local accommodation providers are offering overnight packages to encourage visitors to stay in the Donegal area.

A full programme of activities is planned throughout the week in all areas of the county including 26 guided walks both coastal and inland, a family challenge, educational workshops on outdoor activities and also on the environment and walking for health.

The week long festivities will conclude with a family fun day at Glenveagh Castle where they will present one lucky family with a €500 gift voucher sponsored by Wet’n'Wild, Letterkenny for having completed the family walking challenge!

Launch of Ireland's First Ecotourism Handbook

Fáilte Ireland and leading ecotourism organisation, Greenbox, today published Ireland’s first Ecotourism Handbook with support funding from Border Action. Launched today, the ‘Ecotourism Handbook for Ireland’ is aimed at people working in tourism and is a concise guide to help tourism businesses operate in a green environment.

The Ecotourism Handbook for Ireland will be distributed to over 3,000 tourism businesses by Fáilte Ireland over the next few months and at ecotourism awareness seminars, as a sign of its commitment to helping change the face of Irish tourism.

Speaking at the launch, Paul Keeley, Director of Business Development and Investment at Fáilte Ireland said -

“An environmental approach to tourism is not only an ethical choice but also a business necessity. As a nation, we sell ourselves as a “green” country. Visitor expectations of unspoilt landscapes and a green environment are part of the attraction that lures many to our shores. However, it is not just a matter of image. An environmental approach has the potential to yield cost-savings for tourism businesses – an important consideration given the challenges we face in the year ahead.”

The ‘Ecotourism Handbook for Ireland’ provides a wealth of detail including information on the ecotourism market, how to certify a green business, how to find ‘green’ funding, and how to market your ecotourism business.

Mary Mulvey, CEO of Greenbox said -

“I truly believe to create a strong ecotourism product will only come about through education and training at all levels of the industry from government, trade and industry partners in tourism to host communities, media and the consumers of tourism .Ireland has the potential to develop a quality ecotourism experience and this book will be a big help for any business where to get started.”

The need for an Ecotourism Handbook for Ireland arose out of the success of the Greenbox, Ireland’s first ecotourism destination. Martina Bromley, General Manager Fáilte Ireland North West, said -

“The success of the Greenbox Ecotourism Destination in the North-West has demonstrated to other tourism destinations of the potential that exists in the ecotourism market for Ireland.

The handbook draws heavily on the experience of ecotourism providers in the North-West and will provide practical assistance to tourism businesses throughout Ireland in making the transition to ecotourism so that they too can tap into this emerging and growing market”.

According to the International Ecotourism Society, the ecotourism market has been growing since the 1990’s at rate of between 20-34% every year. Although this varies from destination to destination, the average figure is still three times the growth rate of the industry as a whole.

Green Travel Writer and author of the handbook, Catherine Mack said –

“Sometimes I think that people working in tourism are afraid of the ‘eco’ word. There is a lot of confusion out there about what it means to be ethical, green, sustainable, eco, or responsible, call it what you will. People think it’s going to cost more, alienate their clientele, or put them in some sort of ‘green’ box. In writing this book, I hope to take away some of this fear, and show that it is the only way to move forward in tourism.”

These days, Ireland is becoming known for more than simply verdant hills, green beer and leprechauns. In fact, the country has recently grown quite serious about becoming an eco-friendly destination for tourists. Renowned for its emerald-hued natural beauty which attracts flocks of tourists, Ireland is transforming itself into a country that is quickly becoming as environmentally green as its renowned, lush countryside.

The Irish government is aware that approximately 80% of tourists to Ireland feel that the country’s pristine environment and scenic landscapes are a “ very important ” factor in their choice of Ireland as a holiday destination, making its efforts to offer greener tourism options all the more important.

For those tempted to pursue a green visit to the Emerald Isle, the country’s tourism organizations make it easy.

When most tourists think of Ireland, thoughts turn to quaint inns and hotels. The good news is that there are a growing number of green options in this very fetching category. To encourage hotels to go green, the country offers Green Hospitality Awards. In 2008, 81 out of the island nation’s 960 hotels were honored with one of the new, but already coveted awards.
Many of these are featured on Greenbox, Ireland’s eco-tourism website. The country also participates in the European Union’s green hotel certification program, the EU Flower Eco-Label. Though the initiative is new, Ireland already boasts eighteen accommodations that have earned the label.

For a stay in a classic Georgian manor home, travelers can book a room at the Necarne Manor. With rolling lawns, woods and gardens and an equestrian center, the Gothic Revival estate is as beautiful as it is green. Guests can bike along a nearby trail to a nearby nature reserve and the inn uses organic, fair trade and locally-produced food, even sourcing compost from the on-site stables.

Those yearning for something edgier can try the yurt-inspired Gyreum Eco-Lodge which might best be described as über-green in an Al Gore-on-steroids kind of way. Wind turbines power geothermal heating, solar panels provide hot water, traditional toilets connect to a reed bed, and there’s even an outside compost toilet. Rain from the enormous roof is collected and used for showers and toilets.

For a green tour of Ireland’s, well, greenery, book with Ireland Eco Tours which visits well and lesser-known sites, all from the comfort of a vegetable oil-powered bus.

Even Dublin’s charming lanes and streets are turning green. Completely novel and yet to hit the roads in the U.S., Ecocabs offer Dublin residents and tourists a green alternative to traditional taxis. A fleet of modern passenger tricycles operating a free shuttle service daily from April 1st-December 31st, Ecocabs promote fitness while reducing noise, congestion and carbon emissions.
Failte, the Irish tourism agency, is so committed to greening that it has added an environment section to its web site. The section includes an environmental action plan and carbon strategy. The agency is currently working on environmental standards for conference centers and golf courses and has already reviewed environmental practices in the tourism sector. Talk about your transparent government, a copy of the report with recommendations is on its website.
But it’s not just leprechauns and tourist agencies that are green in Ireland—the Irish are pursuing as many green initiatives for their own benefit. May 22-24 is the annual National Greener Ireland fair which includes information on carbon footprint reduction, energy preservation, and organic produce.

On a grander scale, Sustainable Energy Ireland is a one-stop source for information about grants, saving energy, education, and business approaches to adopting a sustainable energy approach.

According to the Irish tourist agency, “The future of Irish tourism is inextricably linked to the quality of the environment. [The] scenic landscapes, coastline, rivers and lakes and cultural heritage are the bedrock upon which Irish tourism has been built.”
The efforts of the Irish to ensure their environment and tourism thrive are more than mere blarney. While the existence of leprechauns might be debated, the efforts of the Irish to go green are as real as the green hills of Ireland itself.

Greenbox, Local politicians and business leaders join Orchard Acre Farm in celebrating a prestigious NI Environment Award

Orchard Acre Farm is at the forefront of green business and sustainable development and today celebrates winning the RTPI/RSPB Sustainable Planning Award. The award recognises buildings and planning processes that have high environmental standards. Orchard Acre Barn more than fits the bill.

The Fermanagh-based small farm business recently added an Eco Barn to its portfolio. The Barn has a function room which is bathed in natural light, a kitchen classroom with a wood burning stove that heats the whole building, and a design that boasts high levels of insulation.

Proprietor Teresa O’Hare said, “We are totally thrilled to receive this NI Award. We are a small business with big green standards. When we developed the Barn our aim was to give our guests and visitors beautiful facilities without costing the earth! For instance, we use sunlight in the conference Room, hot water from the solar panels and rain water in the toilets.”

The Barn represents a significant capital investment of over £200,000 for the Irvinestown based farm. The project was a recipient of capital funding from the Greenbox to support the eco tourism aspects of the farm business. The total grant funded 50% of the cost of building the barn. The environmental features were designed to reduce the farm's environmental 'footprint' and help minimise running costs through energy savings.
Teresa continued, “In the world of small businesses like mine, it’s about reducing costs. For Orchard Acre Farm our objectives to reduce environmental costs also helps us to save on running costs through energy efficiency, renewable energy and insulation. The people here present today at this celebration have helped me to put a business idea into reality. For the most part, this was done without compromise to our farm business’ high environmental standards. They should be just as proud as I am."

The awards panel noted the building won because of its sensitive use of vernacular architecture, hyper local building supplies which were recycled, use of renewable energy, as well as having insulation that incorporated solar panels.

Claire Ferry, Planning Officer of the RSPB, said, “This is a wonderful inspiration to us as Ms O’Hare saw the opportunity to convert an unused building and did so in an environmentally-friendly way. It goes to show that individuals do and can make a difference. The RSPB warmly congratulates her.”

Garvan Rafferty from the RTPI was equally effusive. “The Eco Barn demonstrates that environmental planning does not have to be done on a grand scale. Single buildings also make a difference – their cumulative effect is just as powerful as a ‘prestige’ project. We were impressed with the thought that was put into the redevelopment of the building,” he said. “I am really pleased that we have won the award. It means so much to us that we are able to say that the work that we have done has been recognised by organisations such as the RTPI and RSPB. We hope that this will encourage others to do the same – it benefits the local economy and the environment!” said Ms O’Hare

North Leitrim Glens Hill Walking Festival 2009

With the support of WWOOF International and WWOOF UK, as well as WWOOF Independents, who have organised WWOOFers for us in Ireland since the demise of WWOOF Ireland 7 or 8 years ago, I am in the process of re-establishing WWOOF IRELAND. To that end a new website is being developed which will go 'live' in the new year and through which all WWOOF hosts in Ireland and WWOOFers to Ireland will be able to register for next year.

Although I am happy to continue running WWOOF in Ireland as an independent operator along the line of WWOOF Independents, I am contacting you in the first instance with my ideas for a consultation process for the setting up of a new WWOOF Ireland. I will be pleased to get any comments or other proposals, but hopefully in the setting up process and the meetings I am proposing here, there will be plenty of opportunity for debate and discussion to arrive at the best possible scenarios through 'on the ground' meetings and a forum for debate on the website.

Background

I have been a WWOOF host in West Cork for the last nine years and following my own wwoofing experience in New Zealand 2 years ago, and meetings with the WWOOF organisers there and in Australia, as well as the UK and WWOOF Independents, I have been working for the last year towards taking over the host list and running WWOOF Ireland as a national organisation.

WWOOF Independents exists mainly to support WWOOF hosts in new countries, but as bookings for hosts in Ireland just did not happen one year, they took on the organisation of our lists. At that time WWOOF was only beginning to be internet based and contact had previously been made purely by letter or telephone. Internet has brought its advantages and also its problems, and now, with the start of a new organisation we have the opportunity to reorganise things - if members feel this is needed – to suit what may be more specific to the needs of WWOOF hosts and WWOOFers in Ireland.

Proposal
So – these are an outline of my proposals:-

1. Start a WWOOF organisation which is transnational being inclusive of WWOOF hosts in Northern Ireland (this has already been negotiated with the WWOOF UK representative there and the Northern Ireland WWOOF hosts will be included in the list for next year)
2. Divide the organisation into regional groups, possibly to be dictated by concentration of WWOOF hosts rather than just geography as hosts are unevenly dispersed throughout the country.
3. Have a representative from each region to be the local contact point or organiser for that region.
4. Through consultation via the website and meetings, develop policies and procedures for the benefit of hosts, WWOOFers and the organisation
- suggestions include:
a) recruitment of new WWOOF hosts in areas which are not well represented through contacting possible organic concerns, environmental agencies etc.
b) recruitment of WWOOFers from young people in Ireland who would be encouraged to WWOOF in their own country - this would help reduce 'green' footprint, by not involving so much travel, and serve to educate the younger generation about food production and other ways of life in their own country as well as helping to 'heal' the often talked about urban/rural divide.
c) implement a 'feed back' system through the regional representatives or the website to provide more support for both hosts and WWOOFers
d) through regional meetings and visits to existing WWOOF hosts discuss these and any other proposals and their implementation (through this consultation decide on the best formation of the WWOOF Ireland Organisation to carry this out. eg: should we be a charity, limited by guarantee, or not for profit (or something else?)
My own view is that it would be good to establish a more personalised service for WWOOF in Ireland and it is through meetings and visits that I hope to set the scene for this and to gauge the general needs of WWOOF hosts here.

PLEASE do respond to this e mail, (sorry if it's a bit long!) even if it is just to say you have received it, as I really would like to know that I am going ahead with the support of the general WWOOF community here and not just the WWOOF organisations mentioned above. And if you have any comments or suggestions don't hesitate to send those! – then maybe I will develop a specific questionnaire to send out prior to meetings?

This is a very grass roots organisation, and I feel strongly that its operation should be defined by its members. I also feel that Carl and Craig of WWOOF Independants have been doing a great job in holding together WWOOF in Ireland in the intervening years and would like to say a big thank you to them from all of us for doing so. You have the power to make a difference. Just start by adopting a few common sense policies that will not sacrifice the attendee experience. In fact, it will probably enhance their experience. Attendees can feel good about participating and knowing what is being done on their behalf.

Ask for:

all catering plates, cups and glasses to be china or glass (non-disposable). If plastic, they must be washable (biodegradable or compostable is better). NO Styrofoam under any circumstances.

condiments to be served in bulk containers, not individual servings, to save packaging. This includes sugar, creamer, butter, cream cheese, etc.

all napkins to be cloth whenever possible. Use coasters instead of cocktail napkins.

separate recycling bins for attendees to use at all catered functions, registration, and especially on the exhibit floor.

all handouts to be printed on two sides using post-consumer recycled paper.

recycled-content promotional products when deciding on pens, bags, shirts and caps. There are beautiful awards made of recycled glass.

the hotels' housekeeping staff to shut blinds and turn down the heat/air conditioning during the day in rooms while attendees are gone.

information about the facilities' recycling program for all areas.

Reduce:

the amount of handouts. Make them available on the web site.
the size of the registration brochure and make the rest of the information available on-line.

These tips are just a starting place, but the impact of even these few changes can be dramatic. It has been our experience that most hotels and meeting facilities are willing to work with you-they benefit as well.

Construction with hemp was pioneered in Northern Ireland as a result of the late farmer John McGrady who was one of the first people to grow hemp in Ireland and Mark Alexander of Castlewellan.

A Hemp Lime wall has been built at the Hillsborough Research Centre which some NIEL members recently visited. We are currently building a hemcrete house in Crossgar

Hemp Lime buildings are carbon negative as they absorb C)2 into the building fabric.
Construction of typical house can save 30-60 tonnes of C02 or more compared with conventional construction

Friday the 15th August, BBC programme Northern Exposure visited Fermanagh. Orchard Acre Farm was voted one of the best 3 destinations in Fermanagh. The Eco Barn is a Flag ship project of the Greenbox. Teresa the proprietor is an active Greenbox member and Winner of the Inspirational Award 2007.

Lawrence rolled up those his famous fancy cuffs and got stuck into
a Beauty From Nature course with his lovely wife Jackie. Guided by expert tutor Pauline Corrigan from Florencecourt; a regular tutor on Orchard Acre Farm.

The programme turned the spotlight onto some of Northern Ireland’s best and most unusual places to visit. It’s no surprise that the brand new Eco Barn was selected from the many nominees as it is the only Eco facility of its kind in Northern Ireland designed by local award winning architects Keys and Monaghan.

Jackie remarked on the beautiful and quiet countryside around Orchard Acre. She spent ages in the garden chatting about its extensive range of plants and herbs with Teresa O’Hare owner of the Farm. A lover of gardening herself Jackie went home armed with new ideas and recipes on how to utilise natural ingredients herself at home in England.

Its no secret that the Llewelyn-Bowens love their comfort and they made great use of the modern and ecological facilities of the Barn. They took home information on other courses at the barn including cookery, willow craft and gardening and they promised to keep an watchful eye for more recipes on the Orchard Acre Farm web site.

Leitrim Landscapes

Leitrim Landscapes, in conjunction with Tawnylust Lodge, Manorhamilton, offers guided walks on nature, archaeology, wildlife and foraging in the North Leitrim area, using local guides. Details of walks
Sat July 19th - 11am, meet at car park opposite Catholic Church Manorhamilon at the Fire Station.
Starting from the star fort located in Manorhamilton town the walk will lead out toward the Leitrim way via the Enniskillen road. We will reach the top of Tullyskeherney about ¾ of an hour later and then enter the plateau with its spectacular views and interesting archaeological sites ranging from the late Neolithic to the early Medieval period. The emphasis of this walk is going to be the geology, archaeology and wildlife. A practical approach in reading and interpreting the landscape around us thus increasing our appreciation of it.
The walk should take about 3 to 4 hours but won’t be strenuous, as a lot of this time has been allocated to looking at and for flora, fauna and things of interest.
Weather permitting we can then descend via the turf road toward Larkfield or loop around and return via the Leitrim way again.

Sunday July 20th - 11am, meet at car park opposite the Catholic Church Manorhamilton at the Fire Station
Leaving Manorhamilton, the walk will take us to Cranny Wood in Lurganboy and across Shanvaus hill affording stunning views of Benbo and Glencar Valley. The difference in geological formations is easily visible in this area. We will pass through Lurganboy village with its historical church and battle site into Milltown Wood along the river Bonet where we will look at a range of plants and wildlife. The duration of this walk is approximately 3 hours.
Walkers should bring strong walking boots/shoes, waterproof clothes, binoculars and lots of enthusiasm!

WORKSHOP IN JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTMAKING

The Leitrim Design House will host a day-long workshop in Japanese woodblock printmaking on June 21st, 11am to 5pm at the Dock, in Carrick-on-Shannon. This workshop is designed to incorporate the basics of the art form of Japanese Woodblock printmaking
Debra Bowden is an artist / printmaker based in Thomastown, County Kilkenny.

Her work is a combination of Japanese woodblock prints and paintings on carved and scorched plywood blocks.
In 2006 she was awarded a six week Artist-in-Residency in Japanese Woodblock Printmaking on Awaji Island, Japan. She was one of seven international artists to be selected and the first ever from Ireland where she was taught skills by Japanese master printmakers, skills that are still being used today in Kyoto and Tokyo.
A large focus of Debra’s training in Japan was in the dissemination of the skills she has acquired. Prior to the course she taught Japanese woodblock printmaking in Grennan Mill Craft School, Thomastown; Kozo Studio and Gallery, Thomastown and the National Print Museum, Dublin.

Traditional tools and materials are used with a variety of Japanese papers and included in the price in this unique workshop.

The fee for this one day workshop is € 90.00
Maximum 8 people per workshop.

Ballymote Family Resource Centre

On Saturday 31 May from 2 – 5pm the Ballymote Family Resource Centre will host the highlight of this year’s Bealtaine Festival, a visual arts project entitled ‘The Elephant in the Bakery – Unexpected Views of Ballymote’.

Bealtaine is a festival ‘Celebrating Creativity in Older Age’ that runs through out the month of May each year, and since February 2008, local active age group members, day care centre users together with local young people aged nine upwards have been working on an arts project that will be showcased to the public on the last day of May in the Ballymote Family Resource Centre, a fitting tribute to the end of this year’s festival.

The group decided to focus on the theme of what makes a community and how we welcome people to that community. The group worked with local artists Karen Webster and Catherine Fanning alongside founding director Susan Langford and artist Sue Mayo from Magic Me, a leading provider in intergenerational arts activities from London. Young and old alike were involved in the process of devising a fun, creative and educational project. A series of art workshops took place on Saturday mornings each week in the Centre during March, April and the final preparations are been made this month.

Come and see the collection of multi media images depicting unusual scenes of the town and of events that took place though the streets of the large market town. Ceramic tiles were also created with words and imagery that convey a sign of welcome or how we greet people. Keep your eyes open for the Double Decker bus that will be in Ballymote for the day, as some of the artwork, ‘Unexpected Views of Ballymote’ are on the bus.

The event is free and open to the public of all ages. Looking forward to seeing some of you in Ballymote on Saturday 31 May.

A collaborative exhibitionbetween two of Leitrim’s most outstanding wood turners Niall Millar and Roy Humphreys.

Both makers are working in wood but with differing designs and products. Both highlight the beauty and diverse uses of wood, bringing age-old crafts into the twenty-first century.

Their brand new collection of hand-crafted garden and household produce come from the forests of County Leitrim. “In the Garden” features a range of items for the home and garden, some traditional, some modern, from potato mashers, honey spoons, and coffee scoops to hay rakes and shoe scrapers.

Showing the use of a pole-lathe, shaving horse and other hand tools. The pole-lathe is an apparatus for turning freshly-cut (green) wood into useful items with a chisel and a foot. The shaving horse is used to hold wood to be shaped with a draw-knife.

The aim of these workshops is to introduce people to the identification and recording of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoise) in Irish waters. The workshop will include field identification of cetaceans at sea and from remains washed up on shore including skull characteristics. A DVD, which includes footage of cetaceans filmed in Irish waters, will also be used as an identification aid. Finally we will discuss how to record cetaceans and the validation procedure for accepting records.

I thought that this was a good explanation of the term "greenwashing".

"To whitewash over something is to cover the cracks so when people talk about whitewashing over the issues they mean that the real issues aren’t being dealt with. Therefore, when people refer to things as being greenwashed or mention greenwashing it means that consumers are being misled by false advertising while the real environmental and ecological aspects are ignored."

EU flower news: A special publication has just been produced by EU Commission. The focus is the island of Ireland, the Greenbox, Kingfisher trail and the regional EU flowers are the main features of this publication. This new publication was promoted at ITB Berlin - the biggest Tourism Fair in Europe.
We'll put a link on this blog and on our site soon. For now, you can see an earlier EU Flower publication, focusing on the whole EU here: Flowers in Ireland are on page four and five.

Mary Mulvey (CEO) and Jerome O'Loughlin of Ireland Ecotours were on Dave Fanning's drivetime radio show on RTE1 on Thursday. They did a great job representing the Greenbox. Don't worry, if you missed it, you can listen here

The Organic Centre, Rossinver, Co. Leitrim
16th March 2008, 11am -6pm

Trevor Sargent, Minister for Food and Horticulture, has been confirmed to attend The Organic Centre’s Potato Day on March 16th at 4pm.
The Organic Centre has invited principals, teachers, parents and students of local Primary Schools to meet the Minister later in the afternoon.
Trevor Sargent has just launched the ‘Meet the Spuds!’ Potato Growing Challenge for Primary Schools. Pupils are being challenged to sow the seed potatoes in February and harvest their crop in June. Speaking at the launch Mr. Sargent said, “It is vital for food security in Ireland and worldwide that more people become involved in growing their own food. The skills to grow potatoes and other nutritional food are an important part of a rounded education. I also hope more young people will think about agriculture as a career as more schools grow more food.”
The 10th annual Potato Day at The Organic Centre coincides this year with The International Year of the Potato. The day will raise awareness of the importance of the potato and potato collector Dave Langford, a member of the UN ad-hoc steering committee for the international year of the potato, will display more then 100 varieties of potatoes, from the common ones to the obscure.
Gardeners from the centre will give growing tips and advice on blight control.
Local men Philip McGuinness and Noel Carter will give a coping session using the Fermanagh Loy (special type of spade).

The centre’s Eco-Shop will offer 18 varieties of organic seed potatoes for sale, here is a selection: Orla, British Queen, Sante, Record, Cara, Golden Wonder, Edzell Blue, Charlotte, Bambibo and Sarpo Mira.

The Grass Roof Café will offer potato dishes on the day.
Entrance fee: €5 for adults, friends and children free, concession €3

Fermanagh Environmental Festival

In April 2006 the first Fermanagh Environmental Festival was held in the grounds of the Enniskillen Lakeland Forum and the event was an outstanding success in attracting over 2,500 people to the 2-day festival.

Over 40 individuals and organisations provided presentations / demonstrations on environmental subjects such as earth education, waste management, renewable energy, organic living, river ecology, habitats & species, fair trade, food miles, alternative technology, biodiversity and countryside management etc.

It is proposed to hold a similar Festival in May 2008 and the purpose of this letter is to invite your participation.

Potato Day at The Organic Centre with Minister Trevor Sargent

The 10th annual potato day held at The Organic Centre, Rossinver, Co. Leitrim on Sunday 16th of March, which kicks off the season at the centre, will have an international dimension this year with 2008 being the International Year of the Potato.

Potato collector Dave Langford, a member of the UN ad-hoc steering committee for the international year of the potato, will display more then 100 varieties of potatoes, from the common ones to the obscure. Gardeners from the centre will give growing tips and advice on blight control and conduct a planting session using the lazy bed method (coping). The Grass Roof Café will offer potato dishes and the Eco-Shop will sell a selection of organic seed potatoes.
Trevor Sargent from the Green Party and Minister for Food and Horticulture will address visitors on the day. He has just launched the ‘Meet the Spuds!’ Potato Growing Challenge for Primary Schools.Pupils are being challenged to sow the seed potatoes in February and harvest their crop in June. Speaking at the launch Mr. Sargent said, “It is vital for food security in Ireland and worldwide that more people become involved in growing their own food. The skills to grow potatoes and other nutritional food are an important part of a rounded education. I also hope more young people will think about agriculture as a career as more schools grow more food.”
The Potato Day will raise awareness of the importance of the potato and also presents the perfect opportunity to unearth the good things about the humble spud that we might have forgotten.Potatoes are rich in carbohydrates and also contain some protein, little or no fat, are a good source of potassium and contribute a significant amount of vitamin C.

In a world increasingly concerned with carbon footprints and the effects of global warming it is important to re-discover the potato, which can produce nutritious food, on less land, than any other major crop. So let’s get back to our roots and grow them or buy locally.

Perfectly seasonal, taken at the right time of the day to really bring out the brightness of the sky, there isn't a lot more that can be said about this picture - it speaks for itself.

Just a short update on what’s happening

There are two events coming up which may be of interest to you. The first is an invitation to the Business Women’s Network Green business evening at the Hilton Hotel Templepatrick 4-7pm in the evening, Thursday February 28th (Event1),

Whilst it seems a long way to go for an event, it will be worth while if you have a business and want to get the word out about it in Northern Ireland .Many women are the decision makers when it comes to holidays and if you have little or no trade from Northern Ireland well this is your chance to come and meet women from all over the North.
This year our annual expert speakers day (Event2) will be held at the Blacklion Golf Club on Tuesday March the 4th from 9.00am to 4.00pm . This is a great event, free for network members and full of useful information , don’t miss it . It is, as usual an excellent chance to network or bring along your stall with products which you can sell to others on the day.

For the first time The Organic Centre offers now advanced gardening courses with Ingrid.

There are three separate day courses offered for those who already have gardening experience but who may wish to expand their horticultural expertise.

The courses will run from 10am -5pm, cost €90 and are hands-on complimented by class room sessions, making full use of the gardens and facilities at The Organic Centre.

Sat February 17th: Soil Fertility management… participants who undertook the garden Complete Course will have had a basic introduction to soils, this course focuses on how, as gardeners, we manage soil fertility organically. The emphasis will be on a holistic approach viz., understanding the physical, biological and chemical properties of the soil and how to work in harmony with these three properties to attain a healthy fertile soil.

Rotation and crop planning will also be covered in terms of the overall fertility plan

There will be a practical session on composting in the Organic Centre’s dedicated demonstration area, a seed sowing session to assess skills, drawing up of individual fertility plans based on soil type to link in with your rotation plan for the year ahead

Sat April 12th: Pests and Diseases

There are a myriad of pests and diseases that can affect vegetable crops, fortunately we only encounter a number of very common ones eg blight, botrytis, slugs, aphids. We will look at the most common signs and symptoms for a range of pests and diseases and how through good practise eg hygiene, biodiversity, companion planting etc in the garden the impact of pests and diseases can be minimised. Remember while control is necessary in some cases particularly in the case of disease, the organic approach in terms of attaining a good ecological balance of prey and predator will be emphasised

There will be a practical session where (hopefully we won’t find any PN D’s at the centre!) we will have a tour of the gardens with the emphasis on aspects of pest and disease management. We will also skill up in pricking out, potting up and planting on.

Sun October 19th: Weed management.

Weeds in the vegetable garden are fairly obvious, but do you know how to identify whether it’s a pernicious perennial, a biennial or an annual, is it safe to put on the compost heap? It’s very important as a gardener to be able, not only to know ‘x’ plant is a weed, you should be able to name it and ultimately what plant family it belongs to. This knowledge is key to weed management

Therefore you will be sent out to gather as many wild plants that you can muster in October and you will learn how to use the wildflower guide to ID plants that can be potential weeds in your garden.

We will discuss all the methods that can be used to make our lives easier as, for organic gardeners weeding is the biggest labour input during the gardening year.

I’d appreciate participants bringing plants from their gardens that are problematic. As this course runs in October perhaps you could gather a collection late August September and bring in dry samples

Rossinvers' Organic Centre bids farewell to successful students from 2007

The twelve full-time students came together last Friday to celebrate their very successful completion of the FETAC-Level 5 accredited course in organic horticulture supported by FAS. While St.Brigid was ringing in the the new season with snowflakes and bitterly cold temperatures the students where looking back on their achievements and experiences of the last year and ahead into their future career in organic horticulture.

Most part of the training took place at The Organic Centre, using the horticultural facilities, such as the polytunnels and a large outdoor vegetable production area as well as the orchard and softfruit area to demonstrate hands-on horticultural methods to successfully grow fruit and vegetable organically. During the summer students trained and worked closely together with the experienced gardenteam from The Organic Centre.

The students also received classroom teachings and lectures delivered by Organic Centre staff and guest speakers to back up the practical training.

The combination of the two ways of learning proofed very successful for the students and their trainers showing in high grades achieved in botany, organic crop protection, organic food crops and organic soil management exams and projects.

During the winter month a "Start your own Business" course plus four weeks of work experience outside The Organic Centre rounded off the diverse course in Organic Horticulture.

On the 18th of February 2008 The Organic Centre will welcome a new group of students to train in organic horticulture in an exciting eight module FETAC-course.

The programme seeks to offer practical advice and enjoyable opportunities for the increasing numbers of people interested in organic gardening and horticulture courses. As oil prices continue to rise, we are likely to see profound changes affecting transport, food production, housing and energy sources. Launch of Greenbox Ecotourism Label

PRESS RELEASE

Ireland’s lead in the €5 billion global ecotourism sector was further enhanced this week when The Greenbox Company publicly launched its innovative Ecotourism Labelling System and also acknowledged the first ecotourism holiday and short break packages to be accredited by the system at a special awards ceremony. The launch took place at Fáilte Ireland’s annual National Tourism Conference on 27th November, which this year took the theme of “Tourism and the Environment 2007, Current Climate, Future Trends”. In total twelve individual businesses operating in the Greenbox region were awarded their certificates by Shaun Quinn, CEO Fáilte Ireland and Mr David Sollitt, Executive Director of The International Ecotourism Society (TIES).

Work on the label began in autumn 2006 by a panel comprised of Greenbox Staff and Greenbox Network member businesses, as well as representatives from Sligo Institute of Technology and The Western Development Commission (WDC). Over a number of months a set of criteria was designed that would reflect the efforts of existing ecotourism operators in the Greenbox region, who were already providing experiences for guests that were “based in nature, providing interpretation and information, environmentally friendly, contributing to conservation and local communities, responsibly marketed and culturally respectful”. Criteria were also chosen that would reflect the uniqueness of the region, particularly in a cross border peace and reconciliation context.

The standard was piloted in Spring 2007 by a number of tourism businesses and involved the provision of a training and mentoring programme for those embarking on the certification process. In the Autumn the first applications were assessed and approved by an independent panel comprised of representatives from Fáilte Ireland, National Standards Authority of Ireland and the Environmental Protection Agency.

The development of an ecotourism sector in Ireland is regarded as an important strategy in addressing recent issues including the trend towards shorter urban breaks which has posed significant challenges for rural areas. The North West in particular has experienced a 19.4% decline in international visitor numbers between 2000 and 2004. Ecotourism by its nature tends to be more rural and visitors tend to spend 8-14 days per trip. Based on international figures, the Irish market has a potential value of up to €51 million a year.

Speaking at the event Greenbox CEO Mary Mulvey said “ Today really marks a watershed in Irish tourism and a way forward to develop a new type of tourism based on strongly held environmental principles and closely linked to learning, conservation and local communities. The Greenbox has developed a practical and user friendly Ecotourism Labelling approach which is designed to meet the need of small businesses. The ecotourism packages created to date have been very well received by tour operators and the responsible travel media”.

A cross-border initiative, the Greenbox is Ireland’s first integrated ecotourism destination. In 2006-2007 the Greenbox Capital Development Programme encouraged €4 million of private sector investment in the ecotourism sector. The organisation has grown to cover a network of more than 150 attractions, activity providers, guest houses, health farms, organic operators and leisure centres throughout Fermanagh, Leitrim, West Cavan, North Sligo, South Donegal and North West Monaghan.
